It was opened in 1912 with just 15 animals. The city soon outgrew it and built a new one in another part of the park in 1966, they transferred the animals and abandoned the old zoo.
The old site is clearly visited frequently, there's graffiti on every surface and holes in every fence but these signs of human life do little to take the edge off the weirdness of the place. The cages are tiny with very little light, it's intensely disturbing to think animals were kept there. Nevertheless, it's an interesting spot to visit and there are great views of the city.
